Alishan Station is the terminus of the Alishan Forest Railway and also the starting point of the Alishan branch Zhu Mountain line, Zhaoping line and Shenmu line.
Due to the surge in tourists in the 1970s and the lack of hinterland in the Zhaoping area, in order to expand the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, construction started in August 1977.
It was officially put into operation on January 11, 1981, and in order to distinguish it from the still in use Zhaoping old station, it was also known as "Alishan New Station" at the time.
The September 21, 1999 earthquake made the new station a dangerous building and the end station of the main line returned to Zhaoping station.
After 2003, in order to alleviate the operational burden of Zhaoping Station, the Forest Conservation Bureau set up a temporary station next to the Alishan garage and built a new station on the original site after the disaster. Alishan Station was officially completed and reopened in September 2007.
